Epic Bike Ride Day 23 June 19

Thoughts from Kelly: We left the beautiful Breckenridge/Frisco/Silverthorne area at our average time of 10:30.  After a few miles of the glorious bike path and some highway, Mark was met with a steep climb that required a few breaks.  During one of them, we met another rider, Eric from Phoenix, who encouraged Mark to get going again.  We ended up playing leapfrog with him the rest of the day. Today also had some cool scene changes from valleys to mountains to rivers and lakes (I think that pretty much describes all of the Continental Divide).   As we rode/drove into Kremmling, we crossed the Colorado River for the first time (this trip), boy is it beautiful!  We found an RV park that let us stay there and we got to shower again, hurray!

Thoughts from Mark: I didn’t want to leave Frisco, but these miles aren’t going to ride themselves.  I can’t even accurately describe how nice the bike path was, especially after riding some of the washboard and/or rocky roads.  After about 15 miles of bike path and highway, we turned onto a dirt road and immediately began climbing.  After several hundred feet of climbing, I stopped to take a break, and there were four or five donkeys or mules who appeared to be frozen.  They all had their heads pointed away from the extremely strong wind. None of them were moving or eating or doing anything for approximately 20 minutes, at least.  Kelly was very concerned that they were depressed, or had something seriously wrong with them.  Eventually, they moved along and another rider, Eric (from Phoenix), rode up to our truck.  We talked for a bit and then began riding together.  We became separated on the steep climb and leap frogged a couple of times for the rest of the day.  We rode into Kremmling, and I was immediately attacked by at least 6.2 millions mosquitos.

Miles for the day:  58.07          Feet climbed today:  2,831

Total miles ridden:  1,054.27     Total feet climbed:  70,488
