Epic Bike Ride Day 24 June 20
Thoughts from Kelly: The Red Mountain RV Park in Kremmling had an interesting set up. The section we were in was very tight and cramped with tent spots and RV spots, but they did have other RV spots that had more room. Their bathrooms had very small doors for the showers and toilets, so not much privacy was offered-but at least we got to shower! My favorite part of the park was the dishwashing sink in the bathroom, we really needed that! After some truck cleaning, doing dishes, and getting ready to go, we went to the post office to see if my new glasses and a letter from my mom were there. Sometime early on, I sat on my glasses and I’ve been sporting the super glue, duct tape, and bandaid look. I was thrilled that both items were there, and love my new glasses with magnetic sun glasses topper (from the company Pair). I was a bit nauseous for a few hours while I adjusted to my new prescription, but everything was crystal clear! We hit the road for a short riding day to give Mark a nice half rest day. We had to take a few extra breaks for rain and lightning. During one of them, Brian (from Santa Fe) rode up and took us up on the offer to hang out in the truck as the storm passed. A short time later Sonia rode up but kept riding as the worst of the storm was over. Mark and Brian rode together after the storm and eventually Brian took the lead, but met up with us at the Radium Recreation area where we planned to camp, although he rode on. While we were setting up camp, Sonia arrived and was one camp site over from us, how cool! We also met two other riders, Jon and Tony from New Zealand. They decided to ride to a different camp ground since a storm was coming and there wasn’t a ton of shelter. We had made plans to meet my sister (Marla) up the road a bit, so we took off and drove about 6 miles to a cool river camp. We had actually been there before, when we were in the area for Marla’s wedding about 9 years ago. Well, that storm was pretty intense so we all took shelter in our cars. After the storm it was pretty cold, but we cooked soup on our camp stove and enjoyed each others company. When we got back to our camp site in Radium, we saw that Sonia was moving all her stuff, as she was in the wrong campsite and the people who reserved it asked her to move. So, Mark and I helped her move and get settled back in. Mark and I were pretty tired, so we quickly got ready for bed, at this time a train came by (wink wink, mom).
Thoughts from Mark: After running a couple of errands in Kremmling, we hit the road and began riding towards Radium. After a few miles, a fairly decent thunder and lightning rainstorm swept in, and we waited it out in the truck. After a few minutes, Santa Fe Brian came riding up, and we convinced him to get into the truck. We all talked for awhile, and Brian said he had just seen two moose. A short time later, Sonia cam riding up, and she was fully dressed in Gore-tex. She said she wanted to test out her rain gear, so she rode on. Once the rain passed, we played leap frog with Sonia, and Brian and I rode a few miles together. We found a nice campground at Radium and stopped after riding just over 20 miles. It was a nice “rest day”. We met two riders, Jon and Tony from New Zealand and gave each of them, and Sonia, a pudding cup.
We met Kelly’s sister at Rancho del Rio, which was less than ten miles away, and it was a place we had been to in 2015. We came back at sunset, helped Sonia move campsites, and called it a night.
