Epic Bike Ride Day 22 June 18

Thoughts from Kelly: Happy Birthday to ME! I woke up still upset about upsetting Mark, but he assured me he wasn’t upset, he was actually thankful I saved him from riding on that awful washboarded road, it was pretty bad.  I started feeling better as we packed up and got ready for our day.  The ride/drive through Boreas Pass to Breckenridge was amazing! Snow capped mountains on all sides, even the pass still had snow. There was a ton of traffic along the way, cars, hikers, cyclists, walkers.  We talked to a couple that was cycling, they have a house in the area and were very friendly.  We made it down to Breckenridge around lunchtime, and ate at a brewery that of course had amazing food.

We decided to stay in the area to enjoy the amazing surroundings. Luckily one of the campgrounds still had availability, and I set up camp while Mark was riding the amazing bike path to make up the miles he missed yesterday.  I wanted to ride the path too, so I got geared up and met up with him.  I road just over 5 miles before I needed to stop, as I am still adjusting to the elevation.  Mark continued to ride while I did some fun truck organizing, what a birthday treat-yes, I am being serious! When Mark got back, we decided to go to a local sports bar to watch the Stanley Cup Playoffs game 5.  We had a great time, it was a bar-arcade combo and we had our 2nd drink in 5 months.  There was another guy there celebrating his birthday, so we enjoyed a birthday high five and all his friends told me happy birthday, so sweet.  I had a great 49th birthday!

Thoughts from Mark:  The climb to Boreas pass was relatively “easy,” and the views at the top were more than worth the effort.  The descent into Breckenridge was stunning, and once we hit pavement again I was flying along at 35mph or faster.  As Kelly said, the food at the brewery was great, and I had a Mac and cheese with some green chile on it.  Here’s a pro tip from noted chef Mark:  anytime you are cooking something, think to yourself “Would this be better if it had green chile on it?”  The answer is always yes. After lunch, I rode the incredible, glorious, beautiful, butter smooth dedicated bike path to Frisco.  After setting up camp, Kelly and I went for a birthday ride along the lake.  We then went to a sports bar/arcade and watched the Edmonton Oilers vs. Florida Panthers Stanley Cup Final game #5.  In case you are wondering, Edmonton won the game, but trail in the series 3-2. It was a truly great day and (hopefully) a fun birthday for Kelly.
