Epic Bike Ride Day 48 July 15
Thoughts from Mark: A decent day on the bike, and the continuation of beautiful scenery in Canada! We haven’t been in Canada in a few years, and it’s easy to forget just how tall/impressive the mountains can be. We spent a few hours in Fernie, as we dropped some laundry off at a hotel, and they offered to wash/fold and watch it for us as we explored downtown. In a 4 or 5 block area, there were at least 5 bike/ski shops, and it’s always fun (for me at least) to poke around and see the new bikes. I can’t say that any of them are getting cheaper, and it’s not uncommon to see a $10,000 bike in the shops. I need to find a cheaper hobby!
Once we hit the road, it was a fairly straightforward ride along a busy-ish street/highway, but there was a decent shoulder on it, so it was a safe-ish ride. We ended up in Crowsnest, which looked like a fairly rough (at least around the edges) town. It seemed like a place where if you walked into a bar, there is a decent chance they might not appreciate “outsiders.” This is just a feeling we had, and not based on any data, as we didn’t walk into any bars. We grabbed some ice, and put the bike on the truck to drive to a camping spot. We went into the hills, and found a dispersed spot a few miles away. At first it looked like a pretty remote spot, but there were actually a decent number of vehicles that went by throughout the night.
